About the WiFi QR Code converter

Reading a long WiFi password aloud is miserable, and writing it on a card invites typos. A WiFi QR code encodes the network name, the password and the security type in a form every modern phone understands: point the camera, tap the prompt, connected.

This is one place where a browser-based generator matters rather than merely being nice. Your WiFi password is a live credential, and pasting it into a website that generates the code on its server means handing it over. Here it never leaves the page.

What phones support it

iPhones since iOS 11 and Android since version 10 handle these natively from the camera app — no special reader needed. Older Android phones may need a QR app, but the format is the same.

The security type has to match your router. Nearly every current network is WPA2 or WPA3, both of which use the WPA setting here. WEP is long obsolete and only appears on very old equipment.

Use your guest network

A printed code is readable by anyone who can see it, including through a window or in the background of a photograph. Point it at a guest network rather than your main one, so a scan grants internet access without exposing the printers, drives and cameras on your primary network.

If your router does not offer a guest network, treat the printed code the way you would treat the password written on a wall — because that is exactly what it is.

Special characters

Semicolons, colons, commas, quotes and backslashes carry meaning in the WiFi payload format, so they are escaped automatically. A password containing them works correctly without you doing anything.

Enter the network name exactly as it appears, including capitals and spaces — SSIDs are case sensitive and a mismatch simply will not connect.

Colour and contrast

Scanners read brightness, not hue. Keep the foreground much darker than the background and almost any colour pair works; use two mid-tones and it will fail regardless of how different they look to you.

Never invert a code — light modules on a dark background breaks many readers, which assume dark-on-light. If you want a dark aesthetic, put a normal code inside a light panel.

Is my WiFi password uploaded?

No. The code is built in your browser and nothing is transmitted. That is the main reason to prefer this over a server-side generator: your password is a live credential.

Can someone read the password out of the code?

Yes — anyone who scans it gets the password in plain text. The code is a convenient way to share it, not a way to hide it. Use a guest network and treat the printout accordingly.

It does not connect. What is wrong?

Almost always the security type or a mistyped SSID. Check the network name matches exactly, including capitals, and that WPA is selected for any modern router. Hidden networks need the hidden option ticked.

Why is there a blank border I cannot remove?

That is the quiet zone, and the specification requires four modules of it. Scanners use it to find where the code stops. You can reduce it here, but codes with a thin border fail noticeably more often in the wild.

Will the code stop working later?

No. The data is encoded directly into the pattern, so there is no short link and nothing to expire. Codes from services that route through their own domain stop working when that service does.
