About the Recipe Scaler converter
Cooking for six from a recipe that serves four means multiplying every quantity by one and a half, in your head, while holding a mixing bowl.
Paste the recipe, say how many people you are feeding, and get it back with the amounts rewritten — in fractions you can actually measure.
Amounts you can measure
Multiplying 1¾ cups by 1.5 gives 2.625 cups, which is a useless number in a kitchen. Quantities are rounded to the nearest eighth and written as ordinary fractions, so 2⅝ is what you get.
Amounts that land very close to a whole number are rounded to it, because 1⅞ tsp of baking powder is a measurement nobody is going to make accurately anyway.
What deliberately does not scale
Baking times, oven temperatures and tin sizes are left exactly as written. Doubling a recipe does not double its baking time, and a line like "bake for 25 minutes" or "use a 20cm tin" starts with a number just like an ingredient does.
Lines with no measurement at all — "a pinch of salt", "season to taste" — pass through untouched.
What scaling cannot fix
Beyond about double, a recipe often needs more than bigger numbers. A cake batter twice the size in the same tin cooks unevenly, and a pan crowded with twice the meat steams instead of browning.
Eggs are the other awkward one: scaling by 1.5 asks for 4½ eggs. Beat five and use most of it, or round to the nearest whole and accept a slightly different texture.
Frequently asked questions
Does it adjust the cooking time?
No, deliberately. Baking time depends on the depth of the tin and how the heat reaches the middle, not on the quantity — a doubled cake in a wider tin may take the same time, while the same tin filled deeper takes much longer. Check for doneness rather than trusting a scaled number.
Can I halve a recipe with one egg?
Beat the egg, weigh it, and use half — a medium egg is about 50 g out of its shell. That is more reliable than trying to judge half an egg by eye.
Why did a line not change?
It had no quantity the scaler could find, or it looked like a time or a size. Anything it is unsure about is left exactly as you wrote it.
Do I need an account?
No, and there is nothing to sign up for. The conversion happens in your browser, so it also works with the wifi off — handy when the kitchen has bad signal.
